#freeIU - K-Netizen hate is stupid, as usual

For further context, see this article, and some of the other IU-related articles to see why the wave of hate towards IU is growing. Also see these articles by Asian Junkie for a more balanced perspective.

For those of you not in the know, people are pissed at IU for the following reasons.

  • Her new single "Twenty Three" supposedly lacks clear pronunciation and she's dissing a bunch of people (which is uncool or something).

  • Her song from Producers has plagarized material in it.

  • One of the songs on CHAT-SHIRE, 'Zeze', contains references to pedophilia (??) and is disrespecful to the original work.

A few points:

  1. K-Netizens have been giving IU flak for ages and ages. I'm already disinclined to take their side based on how they've instgated witch hunts against Korean celebrities before (coughcoughTablocoughcoughcoughLovelyzcough)

  2. Twenty Three is a kickass song. It calls out all of the hypocrisy going around Korean search portals and does so elegantly. It's also a good song on its own. It's up to your own taste as to whether you like the song or not, but you've got to give props to IU for calling out all the hipocrisy-laden hate that she's been getting for years.

  3. IU had no part in producing/composing the song for the Producers OST (also called '23', confusingly enough), so giving her hate for that is stupid. It's not like Britney Spears herself had any meaningful role in writing the song netizens accuse IU of plagirizing.

My thoughts on Zeze are a bit more complicated, but I'll try to make my argument coherent:
My interepretation of the song with the English lyrics is as follows: IU is narrating as a tree where Zeze takes refuge (in the book My Sweet Orange Tree, the five year old Zeze is abused by his father). The tree loves Zeze, and encourages him to 'climb up', and is sad when he isn't there, but knows he will return. Some of the qualities that the tree likes about Zeze is that he is adorable and innocent.

The thing you should keep in mind about Zeze (and CHAT-SHIRE in general) is that the songs are meant to be based LOOSELY on various works of literature. In the context of the song, we don't know how old Zeze is. He could be a child, or an adult for all we know. Also bear in mind that the lyrics of Zeze don't say ANYTHING about IU wanting to perform sexual acts on children. This isn't Lolita (which is considered a classic and a work of art despite its content) we're talking about here, it's a pop song with almost no allusions to sex whatsoever.

I think this quote from Asian Junkie is very helpful:

"The entire album is built around references to herself and her past image and how that contrasts with how she really is or was. One doesn’t even need to infer anything to come to this conclusion since she mentions it in the lyrics over and over and over again. The fact that netizens keep mentioning things like her dressing up as a kid and continually post a GIF of her sucking on a baby’s bottle is the whole goddamn point. She’s not glorifying pedophila or the lolita image, she’s critiquing it and the people (like uncle fans) who wanted her to remain in a certain image and a certain way, thus boxing her in by only allowing her one image."

If anyone in the Korean music industry has the right to comment on lolita imagery, it's IU. With the Korean entertainment, if you're sexy, you're a slut and if you have a cute concept, you're copying SNSD. If you're younger than 20 doing a sexy concept, you're a whore that's addicted to sex. If you're older than 30 and doing sexy concepts, you're an old bag that needs to get married and have kids, because you won't be able to have children for much longer.

I'm also unwilling to put much stock into how Koreans critique each others' sexual proclivities given how sex-negative Korean society is. Lots and lots of slut shaming and double standards, not to mention a lack of support for LGBTQ communities as well.

Let's just say that injustice and hipocricy get to me.

In conclusion, IU needs to keep on doing what she's doing, especially if that means less ballads.

What do you guys think?

Video games!

Playing video games again?

Yeah, so this is what I do in uni - play video games. And read shoujo manga. But that's not what I'm here to talk about today.

I recently took up Will 'O Wisp (an otome game) and Animal Crossing Wild World, but I've been playing Cyrus on my phone more than anything....since it's awesome ^_^

I'm somewhat tempted to start City Folk again (not from the start obviously, I have too much Gracie furniture....=_=) simply because my avatar in that game rocks =D plus, I have a silver shovel (even more win, lol)

I forget if I caught the Dorado in City Folk or a previous version. Oh well.

Totally excited for 3DS AC, even though I don't have a 3DS yet lol.

But wait, isn't this the time of year I should be worrying about exams?

Anyway sorry for the absence. I should be posting from my netbook and/or phone more from now on. But srsly, LJ needs to have a better android app. =_=

Aaaannnd midterms are almost done! :D (along with hobby-related things)

The end is in sight. Now I can concentrate on the Poly Sci things I've let pile up and my upcoming Philosophy midterm in like, two weeks. Oh joy.

School wise, everything is pretty good. My schedule is great, my classes are great (okay, there are times when Earth Science isn't THAT great). So everything is fine and dandy...

Okay, my Poly Sci discussion group online was kind of my low point.
So I'm basically taking US Politics online, and we have to do a discussion online on the course website.
I took the time and effort to post ON TIME on Sunday night so that everyone could see my discussion question (which was about PRENDA, if you were wondering). The responses are supposed to come in throughout the week, with an initial response in the first half of the week, and an additional reply on the second week.

Way for my discussion group to wait until Friday to get things done. I still had responses coming in on the Monday of the next week from this one girl. T_T

Let me just say this: say I WASN'T checking the course website religiously. I would TOTALLY HATE TO BE PENALIZED FOR YOUR LACK OF INITIATIVE TO POST EARLIER IN THE WEEK. Thankfully, I DID check the course website religiously, since I wanted the full marks, but I guess some people aren't so motivated...

Okay, had to get that out of my system. That is what LJ is for, after all.

In other news...

I started listening to a lot of Korean music lately. Like, A LOT a lot.
Most often, I've been listening to Clazziquai project, which is amazing and wonderful, and I really want to sing Romeo and Juliet, but I suck at harmony and yeah ^_^;;
Also Mighty Mouth. Bad Boy is so catchy, it's a crime. LOL Their rapping is pretty impressive as well.

I've also started to appreciate JeA from Brown Eyed Girls a lot more than I used to, since realizing that she can sing anything and make it sound great. She's one of the few people I think that could sing the phone book and it would sound GREAT. YES.

Well, that was fairly stream-of-consciousness. Let's do that again sometime in the near future! :D

Midterms are coming.

I do not pull all-nighters, for the night is dark and full of terrors...

*AHEM* I'll stop the Game of Thrones references now. That was over the top.
Yes. Due to my reckless procrastination (again?), my workload has piled up. I have readings to do, I have essays, I have MIDTERMS COMING UP IN A WEEK AND A HALF, ARGHHHH!!!!!!!

I really should be working on my US Politics assignment right now, but I have ZERO INTEREST in the Federalist Papers. I'm sorry America. I just don't.

Geh. This is why I should start the day working, not reading manga. Then I'll have lower expectations of excitement.
Oh well. Back to work now.

I tried out Banshee (the music player) aaaannnd.... (And other news)

It's great, and I have no reason to use Amarok (which I hated) anymore. YAY!!
So bye bye, Rhythmbox! It was nice knowing you, in the few days I had you since I installed the Ubuntu update :)
(Also, I don't use iTunes anymore, since I now use Banshee to edit my song tags. WIN. Now I no longer rely on Apple for ANYTHING. BWAHAHA!)

I finally managed to get:
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies AND Android Karenina!!!! :D
Both were only TEN DOLLARS IN TOTAL. SO. COMPLETELY. WIN. I love discounts!!
And the US price listed on the back was like $12 for one of them. And then I imagined how much it would have cost for both at non-discount price and I cried. For like, ten seconds until I remembered I had both of them in my hands. HEHEHE. :D

I will read them after I do my Poly Sci readings (Yes, I am taking Poly Sci

FFXIII-2 is ....

The graphics are kind of...meh, in comparison to its predecessor.

Okay, the soundtrack features both Origa AND KOKIA. HOW IS THIS AMAZING WIN EVEN POSSIBLE????
Square Enix's music is too amazing. That's all there is to it.

Did I even mention there is both a jazz AND metal version of the Chocobo theme in this game? I totally lol'd when I heard the latter, XDDD.

This is totally disjointed since I'm about to turn on my PS3 in like, ten seconds.
Yeah. ^_^

The moment I heard about this, the moment I knew I had to address it.

Okay, Hankyuu. I've been pissed at you before, and I'm gonna be pissed at you again.
I know I've almost fallen out of the loop with all things Takarazuka since I entered university (which I regret), but there is something I just have to say:

Seriously, what is UP with this "demi-top star" thing you've got going on in Moon Troupe? Like, REALLY?
I know Masaki comes out on top with this arrangement (which I agree with), but what is with Mirio? I know they're both popular, but I don't like this wishy-washiness going on here ONE BIT.

Sheesh. It's like Tsukigumi always gets the weird arrangements.
First there was no top musumeyaku. Then they freaking TRIPLE CASTED Rudolph in Elisabeth '09. Really, Hankyuu? REALLY?

But it's not ALL bad.
They're making Teru a top star! YAY~~~~!
Sure, there are people with more senority within Soragumi that could do it, but I LIKE TERU SO I DON'T CARE ^_^

Well, that was rather short and unfocused.
I'm kind of writing two blogs at the same time, so maybe that's why...

ef a tale of memories

Just think, after next Wednesday, everything will be better...

Oh man, I can't believe this semseter is almost over. WOW.
And then, oh man, I can't believe my workload. Part of it is my own doing, though.

I really should be working on my 2000 word (which isn't that much, I guess) paper about American conservative media AND my Japanese report, but I need to give my brain a break. For like, five minutes.

A few minutes ago, I was just chilling with some SNSD. Time Machine is such a good song~~ AND THEN I realized I hadn't even finished a quarter of my paper yet. UGH.
This paper wouldn't be so bad if I didn't have to sift through so many journal articles. I got like six books though, so maybe this is (again) a problem of my own making. Haha.

I need to stop watching SHINee's new video. LIKE, SERIOUSLY. Taemin is too distracting, XD.

Yes. This is random. I need to go back to work now....=_=

Reflections on 2011

What a wild, crazy year...
I graduated from high school, I started university, I turned18 this year...O_o

But in the world of politics? SO MUCH CRAZIER.
Kim Jong Il, Osama Bin Laden, Gadhaffi...lots of bad people were wiped off the face of the earth.
Regimes were toppled in Egypt and Libya (as to whether their new government will be better remains to be seen.)
America kept getting crazier and crazier...from SOPA to the circus of the GOP.

And then there's Occupy, which has my respect. Looking forward to seeing what they'll be doing in the new year. :D

A wild, crazy year to be sure. Hopefully the world doesn't end just yet though. The NDP and the Liberals still need to pick new party leaders, AND THERE'S STILL THE GOP PRIMARY!!!! >:O

In short, looking forward to 2012.
My new years' resolution: to eat healthier, most likely. I snack far too much. Also, to learn Hangul and more Japanese. :D
Thanks to everyone for the wonderful memories and I look forward to your continued company in the new year! ^_^

This is me talking about North Korea.

When I first heard the news of Kim Jong Il's death, it was through a breaking news update from my msnbc app.
I didn't even believe it at first. My first thought was that it had to be a faulty source, I found it so unbelievably surreal.

But it was true. After seeing the footage of the mourning in North Korea on RT, Al Jazeera, BBC and a whole bunch of other places, I realized that this was REALLY happening.

Most of the speculation regarding the transition has mostly focused on DPRK's nuclear program, but I'm MUCH more interested as to whether the human rights violations are going to stop or not. Not a whole lot is known about Kim Jong Un's approval of his father's policies and whether he will change the government or economic systems.

But what do I think of Kim Jong Un?
He's puppet leader material, for sure. No WAY is that military who runs the gulags and the work camps going to let such a n00b take over the world's fourth or fifth largest army, even if he IS descended from Kim Il Sung. Plus, he's pretty darned fat. Like, fat like a BEAR. I swear, he's probably going to have a heart attack when he gets older >_>

Now, onto Kim Jong Il.
A lot of foreign news organizations (as well as satirists) like to portray him as this weird, crazy short wacko, but a lot of foreign diplomats are saying that he's actually very well-briefed and intelligent. Plus, the literacy rate in North Korea is crazy high (this is also the case in countries such as Cuba and Libya).
His extravagant lifestyle in the face of widespread famine is completely and utterly shameful. Not to mention the gulags. UGH. But am I happy he's dead? I'm not too sure. Yes, he was a terrible person who mistreated his people, but I highly doubt his death will bring any changes to the political system of North Korea. The political elite are likely just as corrupt as he is - and I highly doubt that they'd be willing to change any of the distribution policies for the disadvantaged portions of society.
Not to mention closing the gulags. NO WAY are they doing that T_T

I'll be monitoring this situation really closely. Thank goodness I have the Guardian app; it does excellent stories.
I'm never relying on CNN every again >:D
